The 8,000,000t/a atmosphere and vacuum distillation unit of SPC run through the whole flow on February 22 and produced qualified vacuum distillated wax oil. Since then, the annual crude oil processing capacity of SPC jumped up to 14 million tons, ranked among the top in China, and therefore SPC joined the lines of world-class oil refinery bases.

SPC originally had two sets of atmosphere and vacuum distillation units, No.1 and No. 2, with a total crude oil processing capacity of 8.8 million tons per year. The No.1 unit started to construct in 1975 and its annual processing capacity was only 2.8 million tons, which inevitably brought with disadvantages like low operational flexibility, high energy consumption and low product yield. With the increasing portion of high sulfur-bearing oil among the imported crude oil of SPC, the unit became the bottleneck of flexibly mix-refinery of high sulfur-bearing oil. The put-into-use 8,000,000 t/a atmosphere and vacuum distillation unit was the relocation revamping of the No.1 atmosphere and vacuum distillation unit. It was more than one year since the first pole was driven on December 31, 2003 with a total investment of $388 million.

As one of the domestic largest processing capacity unit at present, the new unit of SPC adopted mature process technology and equipment with high efficiency and low energy consumption such as three-stage distillation process, the patent technology of AC/DC electrodesalting, which can effectively increase the operational efficiency and reduce the production cost. And at the same time, the quite excellent supportive conditions can effectively decrease the investment cost. For example, central control room, circulating water plant, light hydrocarbon recover, acidic water treatment were all around the No. 2 atmosphere and vacuum distillation plant at the distance of a road; the crude oil storage can rely on the SINOPEC Baisha Bay Crude Oil Storage Tank Zone; the utility and product storage facilities can use the originally existing facilities. All of these were the full embodiment of the principle of intensivism.

With the increasing heated competition in the world petrochemical market, the development trend of the current world petrochemical consisted of building large adaptable refinery unit, expanding processing scale and enhancing competition power by executing scale economy. The completion and put-into-use of the 8,000,000t/a atmosphere and vacuum distillation unit of SPC laid a solid foundation for the company to expand its refinery scale and optimize the whole process in an all-around way, and improved the adaptability to changes of crude oil type. And therefore, the annual processing capacity for high sulfur-bearing oil sprang from 6 million tons to 14 million tons.

But the refinery capacity of 14 million tons will not be operated fully. One reason was that the refinery units of SPC were mainly use to supply service to the downstream petrochemical units as a refinery and petrochemical integrated company. And meanwhile another reason was that related projects were still under construction or preparation for a series of purification processes needed to make qualified products like high quality gasoline, diesel.
