ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has won a major contract valued at over US$ 500 million to build one of India's first private sector oil refineries. The contract was placed by Essar Oil Limited, and covers the supply of equipment and materials for the Essar Refinery presently under construction at Jamnagar, in the western part of India in Gujarat State. Under a separate contract, ABB is also responsible for the overall project management in the construction of the entire refinery complex.

The refinery is being built on a greenfield site and is designed to produce 9 million metric tons of refined oil per year. The customer, Essar Oil Ltd, is a member of the Essar Group, one of India's largest business houses with assets exceeding US$ 3 billion and with wide engineering interests, including power, oil and gas.
