Alliance Pipeline announces that on December 1 it will commence commercial service to transport, on a firm basis, 37.5 million cubic metres (1.325 billion cubic feet) of natural gas per day on behalf of its contracted shippers.

"I am tremendously pleased to announce that the Alliance Pipeline system is now open for business to serve the Western Canadian natural gas industry", says Norm Gish, Chairman, President and CEO of Alliance Pipeline. "Today marks the culmination of over five years of
systematic planning and meticulous implementation by thousands of people from around the globe and we salute them."

Gish concludes, "Our new, state-of-the-art pipeline system provides Western Canadian natural gas producers the opportunity to expand their markets in both the Midwest United States and Eastern Canada by offering them incremental transportation capacity through a real,
competitive choice. It will provide end-users in these market areas with a new supply conduit for the cleanest-burning hydrocarbon fuel. It will stimulate the exploration and producing sector in Western Canada resulting in enhanced business and employment opportunities in many communities. And, it will significantly contribute revenues to many governments directly in the form of taxes and indirectly in the form of royalties through increases in gas production."

"While the scale of our new system is significant in and of itself, it is only capable of transporting 10 percent of Alberta’s and British Columbia’s total gas production destined for export to either Eastern Canada or the United States", says Allan Edgeworth, Executive VicePresident and Chief Operating Officer. "Other companies have been in the business for decades and they will continue to provide significant export service for Western Canadian gas producers. We are pleased to join their ranks."

Edgeworth concludes, "Natural gas is the fuel of choice in North America primarily because of its environmentally friendly properties. It is clear that the demand for this product will increase in the future. This will stimulate exploration, production and transportation initiatives in new areas of North America. Through careful planning and design, Alliance Pipeline has positioned itself to provide additional throughput capacity at relatively low cost to meet future market demands."
