American Equipment Company (AMECO), a unit of Fluor Global Services, today announced through its Canadian division that it was awarded a contract to provide construction equipment rentals, maintenance and related site services to the downstream component of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project.

The Athabasca Oil Sands Project, owned by a joint venture of Shell Canada Ltd. (60%), Chevron Canada Resources (20%) and Western Oil Sands Inc. (20%), will produce 155,000 barrels per day of synthetic crude oil from the oil sands of northern Alberta. The Athabasca Oil Sands Project comprises the Muskeg River Mine, the Scotford Upgrader and supporting facilities. Construction began in late 1999 with production planned for late 2002.

On behalf of the joint venture owners, Shell is managing Upgrader construction and modifying the Shell Scotford Refinery. Both are located on the Scotford Complex site near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, which is approximately 32 kilometers west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Valued to exceed $32 million (Canadian), the contract runs for the duration of the downstream construction program. AMECO will supply major construction equipment, along with approximately 125 hydraulic and crawler cranes ranging from eight tons to 300 tons.

"This is a world class project," said Russel Miles, AMECO's vice president of Sales and Marketing, "and it is indicative of the kind of integrated sitebusiness we want to continue to grow in Canada."

"This significant award showcases our ability to provide a complete construction equipment solution on a very cost competitive basis," noted Carter Evans, AMECO's regional director of business development. "Fulfilling the requirements of our client's strong emphasis on cost, safety, quality and total package capability, sets AMECO apart from the competition and continues to enhance our position as an industry leader."

Shell Canada Ltd. is one of the largest integrated petroleum companies in Canada. The company is a major producer of natural gas, natural gas liquids and bitumen, and the country's largest producer of sulfur. Shell Canada is also a leading manufacturer, distributor and marketer of refined petroleum products.
