Michael Baker Jr., Inc, a unit of Michael Baker Corporation (AMEX:BKR), has been awarded a $13 million contract from ARCO Alaska to complete final design of a 35-mile oil pipeline that will serve the new Alpine field on Alaska's North Slope.

Baker will be providing final design for the pipeline, civil infrastructure engineering and construction requirements. Baker will complete this work as a member of an engineering/construction alliance established for the project.

The 365-million-barrel Alpine oil field is scheduled to begin production in 2000. The field is expected to reach maximum production of 70,000 barrels a day in 2001. ARCO is investing $750 million in the Alpine project. Construction on the field began in early 1998.

Baker has been a leader in arctic pipeline development for more than 20 years. Baker played a major role in design of the Trans- Alaska pipeline and has since taken part in numerous projects in the United States and Russia.
