SUEZ Energy North America’s subsidiary, Calypso LNG LLC, announced that the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Calypso’s proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) Deepwater Port has been issued.

The Calypso Deepwater Port, proposed to be located approximately 8 to 10 miles offshore from Port Everglades, Florida, is an anchor and buoy system that will deliver natural gas in its common vapor form to an undersea pipeline. The facility will be designed to moor specially built tankers that store and transport LNG. The LNG will be converted from a liquid to a gaseous state on board the ship before being transferred to a pipeline system that is part of Deepwater Port facility. The Deepwater Port facility will in turn connect to an undersea pipeline and will have the capacity to deliver over 1 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas, the equivalent of approximately 25 percent of Florida’s peak demand for natural gas on a hot summer day, to an onshore interconnect in Florida.

“Publication of the DEIS is a major milestone for the project, bringing us closer to the reality of a more reliable and diversified energy supply for South Florida,” said Zin Smati, president and CEO of SUEZ Energy North America. “The Calypso port is positioned to best serve the needs of the market and will operate to the high environmental standards that Florida citizens have come to expect.”

Calypso will continue working with the U. S. Coast Guard and the participating Federal and State regulatory agencies to address any remaining comments to the DEIS. A Final Environmental Impact Statement is expected to be issued within the first quarter of 2008. It will then be presented to the Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, for his review as provided for in the Deepwater Port Act. Upon approval by the Governor, a final review is required by the Maritime Administration prior to the issuance of a Deepwater Port License.

SUEZ expects construction to begin on the Calypso project in 2008.
