Centrica plc today announced it has produced first gas from Burlington Resources ‘Rivers’ fields development project in the East Irish Sea, which will help bring new supplies to the UK market.

Gas from the Calder field – the first of the ‘Rivers’ fields to come on stream – was produced on October 16 and will be bought by Centrica.

Centrica Energy will take over operation of the offshore Calder platform and a new onshore terminal at Barrow in Furness, on behalf of US owner Burlington Resources (Irish Sea) Ltd. The Calder field is expected to flow at approximately 145 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of reservoir gas, with gas sales volumes after processing averaging about 90 mmscfd. Rivers gas will also make best economic use of Centrica’s existing Morecambe facilities and provides valuable third party tariff income.

Gas from Centrica Energy’s South Morecambe and North Morecambe fields is already processed at Barrow, along with gas from Burlington’s Dalton and Millom fields and the Centrica operated Bains field.

Jake Ulrich, Managing Director of Centrica Energy, said: "Rivers will help the UK’s supply situation by bringing new gas into the market this winter and over the coming years as the other Rivers fields come on stream. The project also provides an additional opportunity to make the best use of our experience and skills within our gas production operations.

"At the same time, this builds on our existing relationship with Burlington Resources and demonstrates how we are adding value to our Morecambe operation through third party gas processing."
