Gov. Jack Dalrymple today congratulated Enbridge Pipelines, LLC on the 50th anniversary of its North Dakota pipeline system. The governor credited Enbridge and other pipeline companies with expanding market opportunities for North Dakota oil and natural gas, reducing natural gas flaring and reducing truck traffic in the Oil Patch.

“Enbridge is doing its part to advance the responsible development of our oil and gas resources,” Dalrymple said. “Pipelines offer the safest and most efficient means of transporting oil and natural gas from well site to markets throughout the country. At the same time, the state’s tremendous expansion in pipeline capacity is adding to our quality of life by cutting down on truck traffic and dust and by reducing wear and tear on our roads.”

Dalrymple, Enbridge representatives and other state and local officials marked the anniversary of Enbridge’s pipeline system at the Holiday Inn Riverside in Minot. During the event, Enbridge officials presented the Williston Fire Department with a check for $50,000 to be used toward the building of a training center.

Enbridge employs about 135 people in North Dakota and expects to increase its workforce to about 230 employees by 2015. Enbridge has invested more than $1 billion to expand its pipeline capacity in North Dakota. Since 1996, Enbridge has expanded its pipeline capacity from 80,000 barrels of oil per day to 235,000 barrels per day. The company is also moving ahead with plans to develop the Sandpiper project, an interstate pipeline designed to transfer as much as 325,000 barrels of oil per day from western North Dakota to U.S. refinery markets.

Additionally, Enbridge has developed about 240 miles of crude oil gathering pipelines that transfer oil from well sites and reduce the need for truck transportation in the Oil Patch.

North Dakota pipeline developers have responded to the state’s increased oil and natural gas production in a big way. Between 2011 and 2013, more than $3 billion will be invested in new or expanded natural gas processing and transportation systems in North Dakota. Three years ago, North Dakota produced 243 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Today, the state produces more than 650 million cubic feet of natural gas daily. In the same period, North Dakota’s capacity to ship oil to out-of-state markets is expected to increase from 413,000 barrels per day to 758,000 barrels per day.
