On 20th June 2005, His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of Qatar Petroleum signed the EPC contracts with the consortium of GS Engineering & Construction Corporation and Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd of Korea for the construction of Laffan Refinery, including associated storage and export facilities to be located at Ras Laffan Industrial City for a total cost of US$668.7 million.

The signing ceremony took place at Doha Sheraton Hotel in the presence of senior officials from Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas and the two contracting companies.

The contracts cover the detailed engineering, procurement, supply, construction, and commissioning of a refinery and associated storage and export facilities to process 146,000 bpd of North Field condensate to produce LPG, naphtha, kerosene and gas oil for the export market.

The major units of the refinery complex include a condensate splitter and LPG / naphtha and kerosene hydrotreaters to desulfurize the products enabling the plant to meet the most stringent product quality specifications.

The Refinery will be operated by Qatargas and is expected to be on stream by mid 2008. Participants in the joint venture include Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil and Total S.A
