At 14h45 on August 5, 2013, after more than 3 years of development of Bien Dong 1 Project with many technologic challenges, Bien Dong Petroleum Operating Company (Bien Dong POC) – an affiliate of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, officially pumped the first gas flow from Moc Tinh 1 (MT1) wellhead platform through a 20-kilometer pipeline system to the production and quarters platform – Hai Thach (PQP-HT). At 2h21 on August 7, 2013, condensate separated through the processing system was safely received by the floating storage and offloading (FSO). This important event marked the success of Bien Dong 1 Project.

Bien Dong 1 Project was developed to exploit two gas and condensate fields – Hai Thach and Moc Tinh with duration expected to be 25 years and reach 25,000 b/d of condensate and 8.5 million cubic meters/day of natural gas. Main facilities includes two wellhead platforms, namely Hai Thach 1 (HT1) and Moc Tinh 1 (MT1), weighing approximately 10,000t each, a central processing platform (PQP-HT) weighing 21,000t, the condensate FSO, the two 12-inch and 20-inch pipeline systems linking the two fields as well as the fields and Nam Con Son 1 gas pipeline system. Gas will be transferred to shore via Nam Con Son Pipeline (NCS Pipeline) under an agreement of gas distribution signed with PetroVietnam Gas Joint Stock Corporation (PV Gas).

Bien Dong 1 Project, operated by Bien Dong POC under direction of PVN, is a national key petroleum project. Management, engineering, construction, installation and operation were entirely done by subsidiaries of PVN, achieving weight, water depth and project’s scale records. Facilities had been constructed since June 2010 at two bases: Vietsovpetro and PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) port in Vung Tau. Despite many difficulties and technologic challenges doing such a regional and world-scale project, with the attention of leaders of the Government and ministries, the construction, installation, partial commissioning and overall commissioning before officially receiving the first gas flow of MT1, HT1 and PQP-HT platforms were alternately done in conditions of absolute safety (over 17 billion hours) without any serious accidents and have the quality in accordance with the international and Vietnam registers.

The first gas flow is a milestone of great significance contributing to ensure the national energy security, bringing great interest to the country as well as preserve the national security and sovereignty over islands and sea of country.
