Foster Wheeler Corporation won a $16-million contract from Portugal's Petrogal for their platformate splitting project at the company's Porto Refinery.

Foster Wheeler France, S.A. will be responsible for the detailed engineering, procurement, management and construction of the project, which begins immediately and is due for completion at the end of this year.

The project will produce platformate, a component of the gasoline pool with a benzene content of 1.0% volume maximum. Foster Wheeler will provide a platformate splitter with three side cuts—an overhead light platformate, a heart cut rich in benzene, and the last cut of heavy platformate.

The combined light platformate and heavy platformate will have a benzene content of less than 1.0% volume. The heart cut will have a benzene content of around 40-50% wt. and will be used as feedstock to the benzene toluene extraction arosolvan unit of the Porto Aromatic Complex.

"Platformate splitting is an important element in providing greater efficiencies in the refining process," said Giuseppe Bonadies, president and CEO of Foster Wheeler France, S.A. "Our technical expertise in this area will help Petrogal increase its benzene from its current process and help it meet the European Community fuel specifications on benzene content required in 2000."
