ARCO British Limited, together with its co-venturers Fina Petroleum Development Limited and BHP Petroleum, has announced a gas discovery on the Bombardier prospect in UK offshore block 205/23.

Situated 100km west of the Shetland Islands, the well encountered a gas column and oil shows within sandstones comprising the Rona Ridge. It has now been plugged and abandoned as a gas discovery.

ARCO Exploration Director, Tom Phillips commented, "This discovery continues ARCO's recent succesful drilling story in this area." He continued, "Further work will be required to determine whether an appraisal program is warranted."

Block 205/23 was awarded to ARCO as part of Licence P909 in 1995. ARCO also operates the adjacent four block licence P878 to the east.

ARCO British Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Los Angeles-based ARCO (NYSE: ARC).

Notes to Editors

The only other well in the block was drilled by Mobil in 1975.

ARCO have previously collaborated with adjacent licence holder Deminex to drill 205/27-2 in 1997.
