Indigenously developed Delayed Coking technology with the joint partnership of IndianOil and Engineers India Limited (EIL) has been implemented in the 600 TMTPA capacity Coker-A unit at Barauni refinery, making it first of its kinds in India. The commissioning activities of the unit have been successfully completed with feed cut to coke drum on January 25, 2017.

All the latest state-of-the-art features have been incorporated in the new unit, bringing it at par with the international standards with enhanced safety and reliability. The revamped unit will add to the profitability of the Barauni Refinery and IndianOil as a whole, with enhanced yield of distillates and reduced coke yield. This technology deployment through partnership of two leading Public sector entities IndianOil & EIL is a landmark achievement for Indian refining industry inching further towards the ’Make in India’ initiative by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.

Delayed Coking technology continues to lead the front in the area of resid processing technologies. It offers flexibility and cost advantages to refiners by converting heavy residues to naphtha, gas oil, fuel oil and coke. IndianOil R&D team studied the Coker unit operation and carried out extensive pilot scale studies for performance improvement through revamp based on implementation of IndianOil-EIL Delayed Coker technology. Major hardware changes like installation of new drums, removal of quench column, automated heading and unheading system, coke cutting system & modifications in fractionator etc. were done which is no less than a new grass root unit. This is the 1st unit employing IndianOil-EIL state-of-the-art Coker technology.
