Kårstø contract worth 93.5 MUSD to Aibel

A contract initially worth 93.5 MUSD (470 MNOK) for electrical and instrumentation work at the Kårstø plant has been awarded to Aibel by StatoilHydro on behalf of operator Gassco. This work forms part of the Kårstø expansion project 2010 (KEP2010) at the gas and condensate processing facility, located north of Stavanger, Norway.

Commenting on the award, Aibel president and CEO, R. Rasmus Sunde stated: “A contract of this magnitude truly highlights our ability to handle long term strategic upgrade projects of this kind, where many contributing factors are taken into account, not least safety, reliability and track record. It also reflects positively on the performance of our professional workforce currently at Kårstø working under an ongoing maintenance and modification contract.

”This initial contract, which comes into immediate effect, covers excavation of cable trenches, the laying of new instrumentation and electrical cables and installation of field instruments over large parts of the site. The work also embraces assistance with installing system deliveries for fire and gas alarms, process control and emergency shutdown. The Aibel contract also covers additional options for the eventual testing of the upgraded facilities, the upgrading of a steam boiler and removing old equipment. Work on the core scope starts at Kårstø in August with completion due during 2010.

KEP2010 is the collective term for a number of sub-projects aimed at ensuring Kårstø is sufficiently robust for safe and efficient operation for many years to come.

Key elements include upgrading instrument systems and utilities in the Statpipe/Sleipner parts of the plant. The Kårstø facilities are owned by the Gassled joint venture, with Gassco as operator and StatoilHydro responsible for providing technical services.
