Production from Statoil’s Kristin oil and condensate (light oil) field in the Norwegian Sea began on 3 November.

This development is based on the installation of four subsea templates tied back to a floating platform, with a planned total of 12 wells.

Gas is piped via the Åsgard Transport line to the Kårstø processing plant north of Stavanger, while the condensate goes to the Åsgard C storage ship for export.

Eight of the wells will be highly deviated – the first of their kind to be drilled as subsea completions in a field with high temperature and pressure.

Located at a depth of 4,500 metres below the seabed, the Kristin reservoir has a record pressure of 911 bar and a temperature of 170°C.

“These represent the most demanding conditions ever faced by a development on the Norwegian continental shelf,” says operations vice president Eileen Buan.

“Through recently-developed and pioneering technology, new opportunities are being opened for Statoil on the NCS and internationally.

“As we’ve drilled and completed the wells, our expertise has allowed us to understand and overcome tasks faced along the way. The past few months have been extra challenging but this has been tackled in an impressive manner.”

Due to reach plateau production next summer, Kristin contains estimated recoverable reserves of 43 billion cubic metres of gas and 240 million barrels of condensate.

A total of NOK 21.6 billion has been invested in the development, which includes the Tofte reservoir.

The infrastructure established to produce Kristin lowers the threshold for further projects in the area.

Statoil’s Tyrihans field is already due to be tied back to the Kristin platform, and to come on stream in 2009 when these facilities have spare capacity.

The licensees in Kristin are Statoil with 41.2991 per cent, Petoro (19.5770), Hydro (14), Esso (10.8761), Eni (8.2478) and Total (6).
