Total S.A. and Electricite of France (EDF) are launching their joint project to build an "Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)" plant. This facility will be constructed in the area of the Normandy Refinery of Total at Gonfreville, and should enter service at the end of 2003.

This IGCC project will put in place a complex process that integrates gasification (Texaco technology) and a combined cycle, optimizing the use of heavy oil bottoms from the Normandy Refinery to produce electricity, steam, and industrial gas.

First of its type in France, the IGCC project in Gonfreville represents an investment of about 4 billion French Francs. Plans call for the creation of a company constituted principally of Total (35-40%), EDF (30-35%) and Texaco (20-25%) to finance, build and operate these facilities. A joint Total/EdF/Texaco team has been put in place for the development of this project.

The net electrical produce of the IGCC will be 365 megawatts (MW), 250 tons per hour of steam, and 50 to 150 tons per day of hydrogen. The commercialization of electricity will be accomplished, for the most part, by EDF, while the process steam and industrial gas will supply local or regional needs of the petroleum and chemical industries, notably those of Total.

First large joint venture of Total and EDF, this high-performance project will produce energy, will meet future environmental regulations, and will reinforce the competitiveness of the refinery for years to come.

On this occasion, Total and EDF will develop a common expertise in mastering new techniques for the production of energy in France, and overseas, where several cooperative projects are in course of study.
