PetroChina Company Ltd, (PetroChina) held a ceremony today in celebration of the completion of Sebei-Xining-Lanzhou Gas Pipeline Project. PetroChina vice president Shi Xingquan, officials from Gansu and Qinghai provinces, Lanzhou and Xining cities and representatives from construction companies attended the ceremony.

The Sebei-Xining-Lanzhou Gas Pipeline transmits natural gas from gas-rich Sebei in Qinghai Province, to the Xining and Lanzhou areas. With a total length of 930 kilometers, the pipeline starts from Sebei No.1 Gas Field in Qaidam Basin, Qinghai, runs through Xining and terminates in Lanzhou, Gansu. The 660 mm-diameter pipeline has a designed pressure of 6.4Mpa and a designed annual capacity of 2 billion cubic meters. Total investment in the pipeline amounted to RMB2.25 billion.

The project officially started construction on May 1, 2000 and the Sebei-Xining section successfully started to transport gas on 21 May 2001, whilst users in Xining started gas consumption on 1 June 2001. The Xining-Lanzhou section was connected on 6 September 2001, marking the completion of the pipeline project. Overcoming bad natural environment such as insufficient oxygen supply, big differences in temperature, and strong ultraviolet and fighting against high altitude, big drop in elevation and complicated geographical conditions, constructors managed to finish the work ahead of time.

Closely following international practices in developing the Sebei-Xining-Lanzhou Gas Pipeline, PetroChina offered for tender all the design, purchasing, construction and supervision processes and has fully taken into account health, safety and environmental management issues to ensure a high quality of construction. The result is record of pipeline construction in China: it is the longest natural gas pipeline currently running in China and also it runs at the highest altitude of any gas pipeline in China. PetroChina has also put additional efforts into protecting the environment and minimizing the biological impact.
