Shell Malaysia today announced that its upstream B11 P-A project has delivered first gas, achieving this on 11th November 2003. The 600 million standard cubic feet per day capacity platform was developed to maintain security of gas supplies to the MLNG-DUA plant in Bintulu, part of the world's largest liquefied natural gas complex.

Significantly, the offshore installations were fabricated by Sime Sembcorp Engineering in Malaysia. The contract and agreement included the successful delivery and completion of fabrication works for a complete 4-legged drilling/riser platform, one interconnecting bridge and one complete 8-legged production platform.

Jon Chadwick, Shell Malaysia's Chairman, said, "This is a clear demonstration of the Malaysian capability to deliver large-scale construction projects and of Malaysian talents in world class project execution."

The field's higher than normal sour gas contaminant level posed a challenge to Shell in its development. Exotic corrosion-resistant alloy was employed to assure technical integrity in its operation, and special H2S training was conducted for operators working on B11 operations.

The B11 gas field was discovered in1980 and is located 170 km north of Bintulu, offshore Sarawak. Under the terms of PSC, operator Shell Malaysia holds 50% equity and PETRONAS Carigali holds the remaining 50%.
