February 18, 1998

In 1995, Samsung Heavy Industries Co. SHI won a US$ 150 million turnkey order from Vietnam's state-run petroleum company to design, fabricate, test operate and install an offshoregas compression platform in the White Tiger Oil Field.

Fabrication work and test operation were completed at SHI's Koje Shipyard in Korea, and then the company shipped the 10,000-ton facility intact to Vietnam for installation.

Dedicated on February 17, the completed platform has a daily production capacity of 8 million cubic meters of natural gas, making it the largest offshore facility of its kind in Vietnam.

Over 500 people attended the dedication ceremony, including Vietnam Construction Minister Nguyen Manh Kiem and SHI Shipbuilding/Plant Division CEO Jing-wan Kim.

In the past, oil or gas production platforms were fabricated in block units, then shipped to the site for assembly, installation and test operation. This is the first time for the entire facility to be built and test operated in Korea prior to being shipped in one piece to the offshore site. By performing the project this way, total work time was cut by more than 50% and production costs were also reduced.

The facility includes a jacket supported by six 60-meter piles, and a 38-meter-high gas compression platform.

Samsung displayed exceptional know-how in the project by building the gas compressor in-house and shipping the entire facility in one piece prior to installation.
