Technip sets new world deepwater records with the Deep Blue on the Na Kika project in the Gulf of Mexico

Technip announced today that the largest ultra-deepwater reeled pipelay and subsea construction vessel in the industry, the Deep Blue, has realized an unprecedented series of deepwater industry records after completion of its work on the Na Kika project, in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Deep Blue, a 677-foot construction vessel, completed its most recent challenge for the Na Kika project in water depths down to 7,600-feet. Na Kika is a Shell/BP joint venture to develop six separate oil and gas fields surrounding Mississippi Canyon Block 474*.
In March 2004, the Deep Blue completed the infield pipelines, as well as the steel catenary risers (SCR’s) that will bring a production totaling 110,000 barrels of oil and 425 million cubic feet of gas (per day) from below the seabed to the Na Kika platform processing plant.

The Deep Blue’s achievements on Na Kika are:

  • Deepest pipe-in-pipe (PiP) J-lay: 6,272 ft
  • Deepest rigid pipeline by reel-lay: 7,568 ft
  • Deepest pipe-in-pipe by reel lay: 6,940 ft
  • Deepest pipeline Steel Catenary Riser (SCR): 6,360 ft
  • Deepest pipe-in-pipe SCR: 6,360 ft
  • First reeled pipe-in-pipe in-line sleds
  • First use of internal buckle arrestors in pipe-in-pipe
  • First Subsea Remote Operated Vehicle Steel Catenary Riser Transfer Operation.

Ultra deepwater fields in the Gulf of Mexico are pushing the technological limits further than ever before. Technip is proud to have successfully completed the offshore construction phases without any LTI (Lost Time Incidents). The Na Kika project will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award at this year’s Offshore Technology Conference in Houston.
