March 4 1997

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has granted approval for the Discovery Pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico, it was announced today by the Discovery project partners, MAPCO and Texaco.

Construction of the Discovery Pipeline is expected to begin in mid-March after all the FERC required conditions have been satisfied. This pipeline is a 30-inch, 150-mile natural gas pipeline which will access deepwater exploration taking place in the central Gulf of Mexico, specifically in the South Timbalier, Grand Isle, Ewing Bank, Green Canyon and Mississippi Canyon areas offshore Louisiana. The Discovery partners anticipate that the pipeline will begin accepting gas in the fourth quarter of 1997.

In addition to this pipeline, the $300 million Discovery Project includes the construction of a cryogenic processing plant capable of processing 650 million cubic feet of gas per day and an upgrade of a natural gas liquids fractionator in Paradis, La., giving it a capacity of 42,000 barrels per day. Work on the Gas Processing Plant and the fractionator upgrade has already begun.

"We are pleased that the FERC has approved our project and believe that it will be important to the success of the deepwater development in the Gulf of Mexico," said President of Texaco Natural Gas — North America, Terry F. Hudgens. "Additionally, the added services will be a benefit to our customers by offering processing capabilities through the same company responsible for bringing production onshore."

Robert G. Sachse, MAPCO's Chief Operating Officer, said, "The FERC approval of our application is a positive step forward for the Discovery Project which supports our entry into new markets in the Gulf Coast region and elsewhere in the United States which offer high growth potential for our company and shareholders."
