The world’s first solid acid alkylation project — 200,000 tons/year green isooctane industrial demonstration unit, passed the comprehensive assessment by 72-hour continuous operation test on December 11, with a capacity of 12.8t/h and octane number of 95.3. All data had met design and process package requirements. The project was designed by Shanghai Huaxi Chemical Industry Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (“HCIST”) and Anhui Huadong Chemical and Medical Engineering Co., Ltd. (“Huadong Engineering), invested by Shandong Huifeng Petrochemical Group Co., Ltd. and supported by ABB Lummus Crest Inc. in process package technology and by Albemarle in catalyst.

The project was completed in early July this year and successfully operated at first attempt. It would be put into operation in August. So far, the project had been in operation for consecutive four months in a stable condition. The unit used the world’s advanced Alkyclean solid acid catalyst alkylation technology, which used platinum as the active carrier instead of using concentrated sulfuric acid as the catalyst to form the acid sites on the catalyst carrier so as to complete the C4 alkylation reaction. The deactivation of the catalyst would help online regeneration. The alkylate oil produced by the unit was sulfur-free, olefins-free and aromatics-free, and the research octane number (RON) was more than 95, making it a national high-grade blending component of clean gasoline.

The solid acid alkylation technology differed from the conventional sulfuric acid method in production process of waste oil and waste acid-free, completely eliminating the pollution of acid oil, and waste acid, as well as the waste acid leakage. It was a real green and clean production technology, marking a breakthrough in the global petrochemical industry.

It was the first time in the petrochemical industry that four companies worked together to complete such a project. As the designer for the world's first solid acid alkylation unit, HCIST and Huadong Engineering won the bid and then the trust from Shandong Huifeng Petrochemical Group Co., Ltd. Due to insufficient information and reference, HCIST had to mobilize many experts from design department to spend plenty of time on discussion and data modeling. After many rounds of discussions, an optimal project design program was determined, which ensured the success of commissioning.

HCIST and Huadong Engineering were under the management of the same legal entity with A-grade design qualification. HCIST was a high-tech company engaging in engineering and technology development, engineering design, project contracting, and technical services, and embraced abundant human resources and financial strength. It attracted many high-tech experts and executives from well-known domestic design institute and focused its services on petrochemical refining, chemistry, metallurgy, steel, coal and chemical industries. It was the supplier of a variety of gases, in particular hydrogen production units and technologies, all kinds of oil products (coal tar) hydrogenation technology, various catalysts, adsorbents, and special valves.
