Total Discovers New Reserves In Mahakam Block

French oil and gas explorer Total E&P Indonesie found new gas reserves offshore Mahakam block in East Kalimantan. The discovery is located between Tunu and Peciko fields.

Total SA will conduct tests to confirm the discovery, the company said in a press release. The area may produce gas in 2009.

Total operates the Mahakam block, where it owns 50% equity. The other 50% is owned by Japan”s Inpex. Since 1968, Total is the main gas producer in the island.

In 1999, gas production from Tambora, Tunu, and Peciko in Mahakam block rose, allowing it to supply 80% of the requirement in Bontang LNG plant. Total currently produces about 2.6 billion cubic feet of gas a day. The LNG is exported to South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.***
