PetroChina Company Limited ("PetroChina") today announced the completion of the welding work in the trunk pipe of the western section of the West-East Gas Pipeline, an achievement following the trial operation of the eastern section of the Pipeline.

The western section of the West-East Gas Pipeline is 2,330 kilometers in length, extending from Lunnan in Tarim gasfield in Xinjiang to Jingbian through four provinces including Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia and Shaanxi.

Since the beginning of the construction, PetroChina's West-East Pipeline Company, who is responsible for the construction, employed the strategy of passing through the depopulated zone quickly by full commitment with human power, materials and resources. The results are encouraging: 2,092 joints were welded fully automatically and continually; 1,713 joints were welded semi-automatically and a one-time passing rate reached 100%. These are the best records achieved to date in China.

The completion of welding work in the western section of the trunk pipeline lays a solid foundation for the full completion of West-East Gas Pipeline project by the end of 2004, while the transmission of natural gas to Shanghai from Tarim, Xinjiang is targeted to be completed in early 2005.
