Repsol's A Coruña Refinery was once again recognised for its work in Energy Management with the awarding of the ISO 50001 certificate, making it the first in the world to receive this certification. The Complex in A Coruña was already certified last May in accordance with European standard EN-16001, making it one of the first European refineries (and the first for Repsol) to achieve that recognition.

The purpose of the Energy Management System is to establish the systems and processes that improve energy efficiency, making it possible to decrease energy consumption, reducing costs and greenhouse gas emissions through systematic management. That is why it is essential to have the tools necessary to identify, analyse and implement savings opportunities, as well as to efficiently monitor energy consumption and related processes or activities.

To obtain this new ISO certification, the Refinery passed an audit on 28 July for the transition from EN-16001 to ISO-50001. The outcome was favourable, hence Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) has certified the Industrial Complex's Energy Management System in accordance with the new global standard.

The speed in adapting to the new standard was possible due to the maturity of the working methods in Energy Management employed at the A Coruña Refinery for many years now. In the past two, it has served as a pilot project for the entire Repsol group. All of this has enabled the initially implemented Energy Management System to pass the regulatory requirements. Therefore, it was only necessary to make modifications at documentation level, as all of the additional requirements were already being applied at the Complex.

This work method integrates Energy Management as an intrinsic part of work at the Refinery. Following this certification, appropriate actions will continue to be established to continue pressing forward. It is another opportunity to continue enriching, innovating and improving the way we work. It is also a reflection of the work and professionalism of all our Industrial Complex personnel.

Repsol is at the forefront of the sector, improving its competitiveness and energy efficiency. This experience will serve as an example to be followed by the Company's other centres.
