West Papua – Cooperation Contract Contractor Niko Resources is set to start its exploratory drillings in the West Papua IV and Kofiau blocks in the second semester of this year.

This plan was revealed recently by the contractor during a visit with Indonesia’s Upstream Oil and Gas Executive Agency (BPMIGAS) to the Raja Ampat Regency and Kaimana Regency administrations.

Nico Resources, the operator of the two blocks, is slated to start the drilling in the Kofiau working area, Raja Ampat, by the end of August this year. Meanwhile, the drilling schedule in the West Papua IV Block in Kaimana is set for October this year.

Nico Resources Manager of Healthy, Safety and Environment Umar Hidayat said the contractor was willing to engage with the local governments through cooperation. As one of its stakeholders, the local governments are expected to give inputs, so the drilling activity could run well.

Responding to this, Kaimana Regent Matias Mairuma shared his support to the exploration activity carried out by Nico Resources in the region. “We’re hoping that the drillings could discover oil and gas reserves, which would later bring positive impacts to the local people,” he said.

Similar support was expressed by Raja Ampat Regent Markus Wanma. In order to receive supports from the locals, he urged Nico Resources to familiarize its activities at the local administration, district and village levels. (DOL)
