A complete renovation is planned for the Amazonas Shushufindi Refinery, located in the Amazon region, in order to produce more fuels while improving the quality thereof, said the CEO of EP Petroecuador, Mr. Marco Calvopiña Vega.

The senior executive in an interview with an international news agency said the plans to expand the current capacity of the refining plant from 20,000 bpd to 40,000 bpd, also includes the installing multiple units to improve the octane of gasoline and hydrodesulfurization processes will be installed to lower the sulfur content in the derivatives.

Calvopiña Vega said the company AXENS, the French Institute of Oil, was hired to design the new configuration for the Amazon refinery, which provides for the incorporation of an Isomerization plant , a reformer and a Hydrodesulphurisation Unit.

Amazonas Shushufindi Refinery, in operation since 1987, has an operating capacity of 20,000 barrels a day of products such as gasoline, diesel, among others.

Improvement of fuel quality

Mr Vega pointed out that this is an ongoing process of modernization of the Esmeraldas refinery and industrial complex Shushufindi, to improve the quality of the products, for which it has established a total budget of USD 1400 million, of which USD 800
million for the refinery Amazon (CIS) and USD 600 million for Esmeraldas.

"We are in a breeding program features techniques of fuel, our plan is to produce gasoline here and four years to stop importing, "he said.

According to the Plan of Improvement of the quality of fuels in a first stage is sought to replace the currently gasoline

  • Extra 81-octane by a 87-octane
  • Super 90 octane to 92 octane

A second phase includes the installation of new plants (Hydrodesulfurization, Catalytic Reforming and Fluid Catalytic Cracking) in refineries in Esmeraldas and Shushufindi to meet supply quality fuel with Euro V to the domestic market until 2016.

This plan will cost $ 150 million a year, because it must import the products to meet the supply, "we consider that amount we can save it if we put new plants in refineries
we have, "he said.
