The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today approved an application filed by Enbridge Energy, Limited Partnership to replace, construct and operate a crude oil and petroleum pipeline running through Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Jackson, Ingham, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties to address the long-term integrity of the Line 6B pipeline.

The pipeline project consists of approximately 110 miles of new 36-inch diameter pipeline and 50 miles of new 30-inch diameter pipeline, all of which replace certain 30-inch diameter pipeline segments of its existing crude oil and petroleum pipeline. Upon completion of this project, Enbridge will have replaced the entire length of Line 6B with new pipeline from Griffith, Ind. to the St. Clair River in Marysville, Mich.

The company is authorized to replace, design, construct, install, test, operate, maintain, repair and own the replaced segments of its Line 6B project described in its April 16, 2012 application and to install new facilities at the existing station sites at Niles, Mendon, Stockbridge, Howell, Ortonville, and St. Clair (Marysville) stations, including all related appurtenances, for the transportation of crude oil and petroleum.

In approving the company's application, the MPSC said the pipeline will serve a public need, is designed and routed in a reasonable manner, and meets or exceeds current safety and engineering standards.

Within 60 days after completion of the construction of the project, the company will submit "as built" maps to the Commission.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
