On 26 June 2006, White Nile (5B) Petroleum Operating Company (WNPOC) had its First Oil Celebration for Thar Jath Field, in Block 5A, Sudan. OVL holds a participation interest of 24.125% in the Block 5A. The estimated average addition of crude from Block 5A to the present inflow from GNOP will be 50 K BOPD by the end of 2006. The ceremony was represented by Dr. C M Lamba, Director, ONG BV, a subsidiary of OVL.

The auspicious inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Energy and Mining H.E. Dr. Awad Ahmed Al-Jaz, Minister of Transport H.E. Eng. Khual Maniang, State Minister of the Presidential Palace H.E. Telary Daeng and Chairman of Energy Committee, Mr. Husien Morniot. The dignitaries who attended this event were H.E. Dato’ Mohd. Zamri Mohd. Kassim, Malaysian Ambassador to Sudan, Dr. Omer Mohd. Kheir, Secretary General MEM Mr. Awad El-Karim Mohamed Kheir, Director General OEPA, and Mr. Hashim Wahir, Chairman, Petronas (Sudan), and Hj. Nusral Danir, Senior General Manager (International Operations), PCSB.

The Thar Jath field is located about 900km south of Khartoum within the prolific Muglad Basin. The field measures 13.5 by 4km in size. With this first oil celebration, marks another milestone for the oil industry in Sudan. The completion of this project and the development of the Mala Field will boost the oil production to about 50,000 BOPD by the end of this year. Treated crude oil will be exported from Thar Jath through a 172km 24” export pipeline which links the Central Processing Facilities (CPF) to the existing Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company (GNPOC) Pump Station No. 1 at Heglig. The first produced oil from Block 5A will reach Port Sudan in August 2006 for its first commercial lifting.

The First Oil Celebration started after the arrival of the H.E. Minister of Energy and Mining and also other distinguished guests from Khartoum, to Thar Jath. The dignitaries were taken on a tour of CPF. Upon their return, they were greeted with a traditional reception by a cultural group. The event continued with the recital of the Quran by Mr. Yousif Mohamed Tameem and the quotation from the Bible by Dr. John Belio.

A brief presentation was given to the dignitaries about the Thar Jath field and the facilities by WNPOC President. Following this was a presentation of mementos to the Ministers, State Ministers, MEM and OEPA. Souvenirs and mementos were presented to the representatives from shareholding companies, Petronas, OVL and Sudapet, and to the Malaysian Ambassador to Sudan, Thar Jath Main Contractors, members of Project Management Team and Project Management Committee.

Following this was a speech by H.E. Eng. Khual Maniang, Minister of Transport. The event continued with a show by the entertainment group ‘The Nile Boys’ from the southern city of Juba. The function ended with the speech by H.E. Dr. Awad Ahmed Al-Jaz, Minister of Energy and Mining, followed by the inauguration of Thar Jath First Oil Celebration. The function concluded by second spell of cultural presentation by the group ‘Obaiye’, as a final close down of the function.
