ABB has won a $100 million contract from Sonatrach, Algeria’s state oil and gas company, to reconstruct and revamp a treatment unit in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant that serves the Rhourde-Nouss gas field. The contract was booked in the second quarter of 2015.

The scope of work encompasses the engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and testing of hardware and software for the plant. ABB will revamp the plant’s LPG Train 200 – the treatment and fractionation unit that was damaged in 2009 – and bring the plant’s safety systems up to the latest international standards.

ABB will also provide process equipment, electrical and instrumentation systems and will offer optional front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the realization of a new LPG vaporization and re-injection system, a new LPG boosting pumps diagnostic system and bunkerization of the control room.

“ABB is pleased to continue our close and longstanding collaboration with Sonatrach. This project enables us to support Sonatrach to ensure their facility meets the latest standards for safe, reliable and efficient operations,” said Per Erik Holsten, Managing Director for ABB’s Oil, Gas and Chemicals business. “It also reaffirms our presence in Africa which is a key priority in our Next Level strategy.”

The Rhourde-Nouss natural gas field is located in the largely uninhabited central-eastern area of Algeria. It is one of the main gas fields in the country with proven reserves of 13 trillion cubic feet.

With more than 50 years’ experience in oil and gas, ABB has built up a wealth of experience in LPG plants and their associated pipelines. ABB has a long and successful track record in Algeria: other projects executed in the country include the field infrastructure for the El Merk oil and gas fields, a gas flaring elimination project at Haoud Berkaoui, and the delivery of utilities, storage and export facilities for the central processing plant at Menzel Ledjmet East in the Berkine Basin.

LPG is a versatile and efficient energy source with lower greenhouse gas emissions than any other fossil fuel when measured on a total fuel cycle.
